If you’re trying to decide if it’s time to look at a new boiler installation, knowing what the different types of boilers are is important, as well as making sure you’re buying the correct boiler for your home.

What Different Types of Boilers Are Available?

The most common type of boiler is a combi boiler. As the name suggests, combi boilers combine a water heater and central heating system all in one package. This means that there is no need for an external water tank, and nearly 80% of all homes in the UK are heated using combi boilers.

System boilers are less commonly used and they do require an external tank. This external tank only stores the water used for hot water, and the heating is carried out by the boiler itself.

The other main type of boiler you might find is a standard boiler, which are usually used in much older houses with older systems. These boilers need both hot and cold water tanks and so take up quite a bit more space.

What types of boilers are the most efficient?

Efficiency is obviously very important these days in order to keep energy bills down. Combi boilers are on the whole the most energy efficient, and so will save you money as well as space in the long term.

Combi boilers provide hot water on demand instead of keeping a cylinder of water constantly hot, and having hot water on demand means that less energy is used to heat that small amount each time. Looking at cost-effectiveness in general, with combi boilers being the most commonly used type of boiler, any parts needed during a boiler service can be found much more easily and inexpensively.

To find boilers that are economical to run, look for their energy star rating. A highly-rated boiler should run very efficiently, whereas a lower-rated boiler model may not be a good choice, or worth replacing.
